The Hunchback of Notre Dame: A Review
I've seen many shows in recent years. This was the first to move me to tears.
If the Disney version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame was what you were expecting, you would be surprised by this show. The cast of the Evergreen Chorale portrayed a pensive retelling of the famous literature, and in lieu of a happy ending, we received a heart-wrenching end that resulted in standing ovation.
Rife with emotion, this musical portrayed struggles and heartache known by the human heart and its actors gave compelling performances. From the hunchback himself to the hilarious gargoyles and enthusiastic ensemble, the cast was phenomenal.
Leading lady Hannah Marie Harmon stunned with her breathtaking voice as the gypsy Esmerelda, and her dance in the Rhythm of the Tambourine was enthralling. Sought after by not only Quasimodo and Phoebus, but also the nefarious Frollo, Esmerelda's tumultuous life is full of suspense, romance, excitement, heartbreak, fear, and distress. Each of these layers of emotion are beautifully portrayed by Hannah, and her performance had the audience held with bated breath throughout both acts.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a musical filled with beautiful music, dance, and a compelling story that is guaranteed to move you.
