Mentoring Series: Getting started

How do we get started with mentoring?

It always seems to daunting, starting something new and unexplored. Well, at least, if you're like me, it's incredibly daunting. Maybe you're not like me--maybe you're one of the super cool, suave people who knows how to take on new adventures like Peter Pan. I wish I was like that!

But for me, trying new things can be terrifying. I remember the first time I stepped into a mentorship role like this (in the sense that I was asked to meet up with a lovely young girl every week and go through the Bible with her). I didn't know what to do. I thought I had to be witty and charming and have it all together every time we met.

Lol, nope.

You guys, I'm learning so much about the Lord but I still have so much more to go. You might feel the same way, because really we're all just learning and growing as we draw near to Him. All mentoring is, really, is letting someone in and going through it with them. Not having to do life alone. Having some type of a support system.

So to get started, pray and seek the Lord. Be available if He would put someone in your life in that way--whether you're stepping into a role of mentoring someone, or whether you're asking to be mentored. To get started, let the Lord lead.

Mentoring is a great way to check our hearts. Sometimes, I've caught myself wanting to just be a mentor so I could preach at people, or so I could "fix" people. That's not what it's about. But meeting together with another woman of the Lord can be such great fellowship, accountability, and encouragement.

Sharing in life, encouraging the other to keep seeking Jesus.
